An ANPR (automatic number plate recognition), also called LPR (license plate recognition), parking system identifies vehicle plates and uses the result to control entry, calculate parking fees or create access records. For distributors, parking contractors and system integrators, choosing the camera alone is not enough. The complete lane design must match local plates, traffic flow, network conditions, barrier gate control and the customer’s software requirements.
Start with the business process. A residential project may only need a whitelist and automatic barrier opening. A commercial car park may require entry and exit records, fee calculation, payment terminals and operator reports. A factory or logistics site may need blacklists, visitor approval and integration with an existing access platform.
Recognition performance depends on the target country’s plate format, image quality, installation angle, speed, lighting and weather. Send the supplier clear day and night plate samples from the destination market. Ask for model-specific verification with those samples before placing a project order. Do not rely on a universal accuracy claim without defining test conditions.
Camera selection should follow the lane width, recognition distance and mounting position. Resolution alone does not guarantee better results. The plate must occupy enough pixels in the image, remain in focus and avoid excessive horizontal or vertical angle. For a quotation, provide a lane drawing, expected camera-to-vehicle distance and mounting height.

An edge or offline ANPR camera processes plates inside the camera and can usually send results to a controller or management platform. A server-based system sends images or video to central software for processing. Edge recognition can reduce network load and simplify a small site; server-based architecture may be preferable for centralized management or custom analytics. Confirm what continues to operate if the internet or local network is unavailable.
The recognition result normally triggers an automatic barrier gate through a relay, controller or software command. The barrier must also have independent vehicle safety protection. A loop detector, radar sensor or infrared photocell can help prevent closing on a vehicle. Define the trigger sequence for arrival, recognition, opening, passage confirmation and closing.

Before purchase, prepare an interface checklist. Ask whether the system provides HTTP, TCP/IP, relay, SDK or API options for the required model. Define the fields that must be exchanged, such as plate number, time, lane, image, whitelist status, fee and opening command. Compatibility must be checked against the customer’s exact software version; the word “API” alone is not a guarantee of integration.
Confirm IP addressing, bandwidth, local storage, server requirements, user permissions, log retention and backup. Vehicle plates can be personal data in some markets, so the project owner should define lawful use, notice, access control and retention according to local rules. The equipment supplier can provide technical functions, but legal compliance remains project-specific.
Outdoor projects should define operating temperature, rain exposure, dust, lightning protection, power stability and cabinet location. Avoid mounting positions where headlights, direct sunlight or reflective surfaces dominate the plate image. Include surge protection, grounding and suitable network cabling in the installer plan.
Send the project country, plate samples, number of entrances and exits, lane width, vehicle speed, recognition distance, day/night environment, barrier opening speed, local voltage, software workflow, API requirements and required accessories. This prevents under-quoting and reduces integration changes after delivery.
