An automatic gate operator moves a sliding, swing or retractable gate after receiving a command from a remote control, access system or safety device. Correct sizing is essential: choosing only by price or maximum gate weight can cause slow operation, premature wear and unsafe movement. A sliding gate moves horizontally along a track or cantilever structure. A swing gate rotates on hinges as a single or double leaf. A retractable gate expands and contracts along the entrance. Each movement requires a different operator and installation geometry.

Provide the actual moving weight rather than an estimate based only on gate dimensions. For a sliding gate, include the clear opening and total travel. For a swing gate, provide each leaf’s length and weight. Long leaves create higher leverage and wind load even when the gate is relatively light.
A solid-sheet gate catches more wind than an open-bar design. Wind can greatly increase the force required to start, stop or hold a gate. Send photographs, drawings, infill percentage, local wind conditions and hinge or roller details. The operator cannot correct a bent track, poor rollers or misaligned hinges.
Count expected cycles per hour and per day, including peak periods. A villa entrance and a factory shift change have different requirements. Ask whether the published duty cycle applies at the selected gate weight, temperature and opening speed. Allow time for the motor and controller to cool where required.
AC operators are common for straightforward gate automation. Low-voltage DC or BLDC operators can support soft start, adjustable speed and battery-backup options depending on the model. Confirm local mains voltage, controller output, battery capacity, charger and the number of cycles expected during an outage.
Faster movement reduces waiting time but increases the importance of stable mechanics, controlled deceleration and safety detection. Specify the required opening time and travel distance. Never increase speed beyond the approved configuration for the gate mass and operator.
Gate operators may use mechanical, magnetic, Hall-sensor or encoder-based limits. Ask how open and closed positions are learned, how deceleration is controlled and what happens after power loss. The installer should have a clear commissioning and reset procedure.
A moving gate can create crushing, shearing and drawing-in hazards. Project safety may require photocells, safety edges, loop detectors, radar, force limitation, warning lights, audible signals, emergency stop controls and protected mechanical gaps. Requirements vary by country and installation; the system designer must follow applicable local standards.
Confirm how the gate can be released during a power failure or controller fault. The release point should be accessible to authorized staff but protected against unauthorized entry. Keep the key and operating instructions available and include emergency access in staff training.
Common inputs include remote controls, push buttons, keypads, RFID readers, intercoms, face terminals, ANPR/LPR and smart-home relays. Prepare a signal list showing normally open/closed relay logic, opening duration, pedestrian opening, status feedback and any API or network requirements. Confirm compatibility with the exact controller rather than assuming every accessory will connect.
Provide operating temperature, rain and dust exposure, salt or coastal conditions, drainage, lightning risk and grounding.
