ANPR Parking System Site Survey Checklist Before Quotation
ANPR Parking System Site Survey Checklist Before Quotation
Quick Buyer Answer
Before requesting an ANPR parking system quotation, document the entrance and exit lanes, plate format and traffic direction, camera mounting position, day/night lighting, network and power, barrier interface, user rules, payment workflow and required software integration. A camera specification alone is not enough to design a complete parking entrance.
1. Record the Site and Lane Layout
Prepare a simple drawing showing every entrance, exit, reversible lane and pedestrian crossing. Include lane width, vehicle approach direction, turning angle, queuing distance, island dimensions and the proposed location of cameras, barriers, loops or radar. Photographs should be taken from the vehicle approach direction, not only from the side.
2. Define the Plate Environment
Tell the supplier the destination country and common plate formats. Note whether the project includes motorcycles, front-only plates, rear-only plates, temporary plates or mixed international traffic. Do not assume that a system configured for one country will perform identically in every plate environment. Recognition claims should be verified for the actual scene and required operating conditions.
3. Check Camera Geometry
Record the expected camera-to-vehicle distance, mounting height, horizontal and vertical angle, lane width and possible vehicle speed. Identify areas where trucks, buses or adjacent lanes may block the plate. The correct installation aims to obtain a stable, readable plate image while keeping the field of view appropriate for the lane.
4. Inspect Lighting and Weather Exposure
Collect daytime and nighttime photos. Note direct sunlight, vehicle headlights, shadows, reflective surfaces, rain exposure, dust and temperature conditions. If the entrance has no controlled lighting, include that fact in the RFQ. The camera housing, illumination and mounting solution must be matched to the real environment.
5. Confirm Barrier and Safety Inputs
Define how the ANPR controller will command the barrier and how the lane will confirm that a vehicle has passed. Possible project components include loop detectors, radar, photocells, safety edges, traffic lights and manual release controls. Confirm relay logic, timing, status feedback and the required behavior after power or network failure.
6. Describe User and Payment Rules
List the user groups: residents, employees, visitors, monthly subscribers, hotel guests, delivery vehicles or temporary contractors. Explain whether the system requires allowlists, deny lists, prepaid access, pay-on-exit, central cashier, self-service payment or free-time rules. Payment and tax requirements vary by country and must be confirmed before promising integration.
7. Define Software and Data Requirements
State whether the project needs local, cloud or hybrid deployment; number of operator workstations; number of sites; central monitoring; user roles; report exports; language; data-retention policy; and API or database integration. Also specify who owns the server and who will provide remote maintenance.
8. Network and Power Checklist
Record available voltage and frequency, backup-power expectations, Ethernet or fiber availability, internet reliability, IP-address plan, VPN or firewall restrictions and the distance between field devices and the control room. Define the required operating mode during internet loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an ANPR camera open a barrier without software?
Some deployments can use local allowlist or controller logic, while larger projects usually require management software. Confirm the selected architecture and offline requirements.
Is recognition accuracy guaranteed by camera resolution alone?
No. Plate format, installation angle, distance, lighting, vehicle speed, obstruction and software configuration all affect the result.
What should happen if the network fails?
Define whether authorized vehicles should continue using a local list, whether transactions are stored locally and how records synchronize after recovery.
